Wireless networks – a nightmare or a blessing

Wireless networks are those which are not connected by any type of cables. The use of such networks is prevailing because it enables enterprises to avoid the costly process of introducing cables into buildings or as a connection between different equipment locations. Many advantages of wireless networks include increased mobilityinstallation speed and simplicitywider reach of the networkmore flexibilityreduced cost an increased scalability.

Unlike traditional wired networks in which communications travel along a shielded copper wire pair or optical cable, wireless uses radio frequency (RF) signals which literally traverse the open air. As a result, RF signals are completely exposed to anybody within range and subject to fluctuating environmental factors that can degrade performance and make management an administrative nightmare. Whether authorized or not, wireless access points and their users are subject to malicious activity and employee misuse.

To ensure effective, automated wireless threat protection, companies and government organizations should implement a complete wireless security solution covering assets across the enterprise that enables them to discover vulnerabilities, assess threats, prevent attacks, and ensure ongoing compliance - in the most secure, easy-to-use and cost-effective manner available.

Sophos offers a Simple & Secure Wi-Fi solution. Sophos Wireless is easy to deploy and manage so your wireless networks are up and running in no time.

It only takes three steps to set up:

One of the most important things for any IT admin is the visibility into his network and this might become a daily struggle. With Sophos Wireless, this issue is no more. IT admins will always know the status of their Wi-Fi networks, access points, connecting clients and the environment around them, to identify potential risks or inappropriate use of the company’s resources.

Another challenge may come across when providing access to guest users or hotspots. Sophos provides controlled internet access for visitors, contractors and other guests on the network. IT admins can use measures such as a daily password or time-based voucher or can customize guest access to display the hotspot portal with their own terms of service. All of this uses enterprise-grade backend authentication for a seamless user experience.

Other than this Sophos Wireless automatically classifies neighboring networks to identify attempts to infiltrate an organization via Wi-Fi.  It identifies and automatically classifies neighboring Wi-Fi networks, according to their threat level.  An on-demand scan function shows you the very latest threat data is also available. And not to mention that the Threats widget on the dashboard puts the information directly at your fingertips giving users the highest of usability.

As mentioned earlier the greatest advantage of using wireless networks in scalability. With Sophos Wireless, extending the network becomes as simple as adding an additional access point.

Users can create multiple sites and upload their floor plans to get a first visualization for access point placement and coverage before using more advanced planning tools.

Features of site planning include:
  • Viewing multiple sites using Google Maps (excludes China)
  • Using real or simulated access points on your floor plans
  • Getting a first indication before starting your full site planning
Sophos offer a single portfolio of access points which user can choose to deploy and manage in two different ways.

Either with Sophos CentralA single hosted platform which is easy to scale and offers all the flexibility of a cloud-managed environment.

Or with the XG Firewall, this will manage and secure your wired and wireless networks alongside Web, Email, Advanced Threat Protection, and more.

There is a vast range of Wireless Access Points. Sophos provides models for indoor and outdoor use and form factors to suit many different deployment scenarios and budgets. From Entry-level to enterprise models all types of access points are available is Desktop, wall, and ceiling-mount options.

So, what are you waiting for, hurry up and get your wireless network secured…
